Hot Water Extraction That Actually Rinses

"Steam cleaning" is what most people call it. The trade name is hot water extraction. A machine sprays hot water and cleaning solution into the carpet, and powerful suction pulls it straight back out, taking loosened soil with it. It's the method most carpet makers recommend for deep cleaning, because it reaches the base of the pile, where sand and grit grind away at the fibres every time someone walks across them.

How it's done matters more than the machine. A rushed job leaves too much solution and too much water behind. We vacuum before anything gets wet, pre-treat the spots, wash, and then rinse with clear water so the carpet dries soft rather than stiff. When Your Carpet Is Due

  • The traffic lanes have gone grey. Hallways and the path to the couch look darker than the edges of the room.
  • It feels flat and matted. The pile has packed down where people walk most.
  • There's a stale smell. Especially in basements, or after a long winter with the windows shut.
  • Old spots keep coming back. A sign of residue from a past shampoo or spot cleaner.
  • It's been more than a year. Even carpet that looks fine is holding grit you can't see.

Steam Cleaning vs Dry Cleaning

Hot water extraction washes the full depth of the carpet and rinses it out. It removes the most soil and is the better choice for carpet that hasn't been cleaned in a while, for pet accidents and for anything that smells. The trade-off is drying time: usually several hours.

Low-moisture or "dry" cleaning uses very little water and a compound or pad to lift soil from the top of the pile. It dries faster and suits light upkeep in busy spaces, but it doesn't reach as deep and doesn't rinse.

For most Stratford homes we recommend extraction, done properly, about once a year, with quick spot care in between.

Stairs and basements. Stairs are cleaned by hand with a smaller tool, one step at a time, so they take longer and are usually priced separately. Basement carpet often needs extra drying passes and a fan running afterwards, since the air down there is cooler and damper.

Why Stratford Homeowners Book This With Us

Dry Soil Out First

The vacuum pass before washing isn't a formality. It takes out the grit that would otherwise turn to mud in the wand.

A Rinse in Every Room

Clear water goes over the carpet after the wash, so it doesn't dry stiff or attract dirt.

Extra Drying Passes

More slow strokes with suction only means less water left in the pad, and a shorter wait before you get the room back.

Carpet Cleaning Questions

How long will my carpet take to dry?

Typically 6 to 12 hours. Thick or plush carpet and cool basements can take closer to 24. Keep air moving with fans, the furnace fan or air conditioning to speed it up.

Do I need to move furniture first?

Please clear small items, breakables and anything on the floor. We'll move most chairs, tables and lighter furniture, and work around heavy pieces like pianos, full dressers and entertainment units.

Will steam cleaning shrink my carpet?

Not when it's done properly on installed wall-to-wall carpet. Shrinking happens when carpet is soaked and left wet for a long time. We control how much water goes in and take as much back out as we can.
